Shuttle crash kills 7, 25-50 people die in explosion in Lagos

Yesterday, the space shuttle Columbia broke into pieces as it approached for landing, at a height of about 200,000 yards above Texas, raining debris over a huge area of land. I mention this purely so that there is a historical reference to it in my journal. However, at the risk of seeming unfeeling, as the newspapers trumpet the idea that the whole world is in mourning, I find myself earnestly wishing for a life so simple and idyllic that I could find it in me to mourn a vehicle crash killing 7 people I don't know. Yes, obviously the implications are wider than that. Their families. The space program. The people in the path of the debris. But, the same day, there was an explosion in Lagos that killed between 25 and 50 people, and this seems no more remote to me than the shuttle accident.

Greets,
I find myself agreeing with you completely. When 7 people who are completely aware of the dangers of their particular choice of careers die, it gets heralded as a nation-wide or even global tradgedy. However, it is a mere blurb in the evening news when 7 youths, ignorant of dangers and facing a lifetime of opportunity get snuffed out in an avalanch the very same day.

Let's have some consistency.

Watch, and see how the shuttle disaster gets swept under the rug to look out for the war with Iraq. My reason for saying this is that the shuttle disaster (as sad as it is) is just another tear jerker story given to the American public.
It is funny that the fact the crew of the shuttle would not have had any press if it wasn't for the disaster.
Personally, whether it is seven people in a shuttle, or people dying in a third world, or whatever, it effects us. Maybe not directly, but for me, the fact that "something" is not right. As a Christian, I can get a glimpse into what that is.
"The poor you will have with you always..." I wish to remind ourselves that so will tragedy. My concern then is: How do I repent?
